| POT-POURRI The new academic session which is often marked with gaiety and fervour makes students resolved to get down to their prescribed action of surging ahead in terms of academics and other myriad activities conducted in the school. Obviously the new session is also marked with euphoria and excitement generated by the earned promotion to the next class which, with the passage of time, gave way to the studious toil and spirited drive as the children cannot afford to sit over the past laurels. For it is not time for them to glorify the past and subsequent accomplishments. Rather it is expected of them to submerge into the waves struggling to touch the shores of success, as they cannot allow themselves to stagnate like still waters and must exhibit the inner strength to scale the heights of glory so essential in life. We were privileged to have among us an American based distinguished old boy, an adjunct Professor at Kellogg school of management of Chicago, Dr. Rajinder Gupta (Ex J-7) recently, who owed his tremendous success to his alma mater. Meanwhile the boys and girls of outgoing class XII went home after having taken the ISC examination. Hopefully their grooming in the school environment will stand them in good stead and keeping in view the school motto 'Onward and Upward' they will excel in their chosen fields in the days to come. May God bless them all ! Beant Singh Managing Editor CAMPUS NEWS The staff meeting was held on 15th March 2008 to discuss the result of the annual examinations, ended on 10th March 2008. The students reported back after a short mid term break on 23rd March, 2008 and the new session started on 24th March with the issuance of books, note books and stationery to the boys and girls by the concerned class teachers. The festival hockey match that was marked by usual gaiety and fervour was played on 25th March 2008 in the main fields. Both the teams displayed the patches of brilliance. The match ended in a draw with the score line 2-2 goals. The detailed report of the match is published somewhere else in this issue. The ISC Examination ended on 1st April, 2008. The boys and girls of the outgoing class XIIth left the school premises with a heavy heart. They were found trying to control their emotions while meeting their teachers during the time of their departure. After all, PPS was home away from home for all of them. Earlier they were given a farewell lunch on 13th March 2008 where mementoes were presented to them by the Headmaster. Both the Head boy and Head girl summed up their feelings in their emotional speeches. The Headmaster, while addressing them urged them to focus on their future ventures and assured them of all possible help, if required, in the days to come. We were privileged to have our old student Dr. Rajinder Gupta (Ex J-7) and his wife with us on April 1, 2008 who is an adjunct professor at Kellogg school of management, Chicago (U.S.A.) He joined the school in 1960 along with his three brothers (J-1, J-12 and J-25). Reminiscing his old school days he said that the school taught him what growing all by yourself meant. It built a man out of him and values were drilled into him, he added. While addressing the students in the morning assembly on 2nd April, 2008, he urged them not to blame anybody for what they do in life. Spelling out his mantra of success, he made it very clear that excuses have no place in life and focus, accountability and alignment are the keywords to succeed in life. A Ph.D. from Duke University, he spent 25 years at senior management positions working for Fortune 50 global companies. At present he is executive director of a unique and highest level programme called the CEO Perspectives at the world's best management institute. His job involves developing leaders / out standing business strategies and improving sales. For him visiting, his alma mater was a home coming. Earlier in the special assembly held on 2nd April 2008, the Headmaster welcomed Dr. Rajinder Gupta and his wife formally and presented them the school mementoes as a token of love and gratitude. FESTIVAL HOCKEY MATCH Festival hockey match, marked with usual gaiety and fervour, was held on 25th March between the staff and the students. Teachers outnumbering the boys were all set to scrape past the boys' team with hockey coach Mr. Jaiveer Singh Rai was in the staff team. The match started with the blowing of whistle by the umpires Mr. Jaipal Singh and Mr. R.K. Bhardwaj. In the beginning Mr. Jaiveer's scoops into the striking circles of the boys team put them under pressure and most of the time they played a defensive game. However soon they regrouped themselves and hence were able to make forays into the teachers' territory and made the best use of the gaps and shaky defence of the staff by sending the ball in through the stick of Manjinder Singh Dhillon thus gave a lead to the boys' team in the match. The teachers also showed some patches of brilliance and consequently Mr. Swaranjit Singh sounded the board when he deflected the ball he received from Mr. Jaiveer Singh. Both the teams locked at 1-1 by the half time. The match resumed after five minutes interval. The students with much vigour , stamina and skills pushed the teachers to the wall and once again the students' team took a lead when Ameet Singh Sidhu found the target amid thunderous applause by the spectators. The time was ticking away and the teachers were found desperate to equalize the match. The combine efforts of the staff team made it earned many penalty corners. Eventually teachers were able to level the score when Mr. Beant Singh deflected the ball he received once again from Mr. Jaiveer Singh. After that boys went all out to take a lead once again. Their efforts to win the match went awry when the umpires blew the whistle signalling the end of the match. MY VISIT TO JAPAN I owe a sense of gratitude to the school for giving me a chance to have a life time experience in JAPAN. I am glad enough that I was the only student of P.P.S. to go for this exchange programme. I felt so good to be in Japan with all the unknown people. By this exchange programme I came to the know about things that I have never seen in India such as technology. As this was the first time I happened to go abroad. Frankly speaking, I never thought of going for such a good programme at this very young age. I was selected by the "Youth for Understanding India". We were ten Indians selected to go. On 23rd Jan, 08 was our flight to Tokyo in the evening at 8:00 by Jalways Airlines. Next morning on 24th Jan.,08 we were in Tokyo. We were escorted to the National Youth Centre (NYC) which was built in 1960 for Olympics but it was no less than a five start hotel. We had our Japanese lectures there and on 26th we went to see Tokyo museum and also the Emperial Palace both of which were very vast and good. On 27th Jan. I had my departure from Tokyo to Matsuyama at 11:15 a.m. from Haneda Airport by ANA Airlines. Matsuyama was my host place. I was there in Matsuyama from 27th Jan. to 17th Feb. 08. I was excited but a bit scary as I had to go alone from Tokyo to Matsuyama. At Matsuyama Airport I met my host mother named Mrs. Hiroko Figiwara, a retired school principal. She was staying alone in family. I went every where with her. I was also made go to a school everyday. The name of my school was MATSUYAMA HIGASHI HIGH SCHOOL. I was in grade two (2) of that school. I used to attend all the classes everyday. The timings of my school were from 7:20 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but I used to be back by 7:00 p.m. as I joined the Basketball club and improving communication skills and debating club. My host mother was very kind, caring and nice to me. In school I got a big circle of new good Japanese friends and they made my stay in their school very comfortable and also memorable. In Japan the learning in the class was also memorable. In Japan the teaching days are from Monday to Friday and good weekend as holidays on Saturday and Sunday. On one weekend I went to HIROSHIMA by water ship which took three hours for me to reach that place from Matsuyama. I saw peaceful Memorial Park and Museum- the main place of nuclear attack. I saw so many things in the museum which were about the nuclear attack of 6 Aug, 1945. The correct timing of this attack is 8:15 a.m. of 6th Aug., 1945. I also visited one of world's famous places called Miyajima. It was so great to be there. It is said that on Aug. 6, 1945 after that attack, it rained heavily but the colour of that rain water was black. All the sufferers of nuclear attack were dying of thirst but there was no water around so they dipped themselves in that black water. All were crying for help but died. I came back from Hiroshima and then again everyday I used to go to the school. I had so much of fun in school. Next weekend I went for sight seeing and after that I went to see the Matsuyama Zoo where I saw different animals which I had never seen before such as PUMA, POLAR BEAR, OSTRICH, PANGUN etc. On 18th Feb. 2008 I came back from Matsyama to Tokyo by ANA airlines and then on 19th Feb., 08 we went to Narita International airport and came back to India. This exchange programme is one of the biggest gifts I could ever get from my school and I am proud of it. Inderpreet Kaur Class XII A H. No.B0543 SR.
