CAMPUS NEWS

As usual a multiple of co-curricular activities underscored the months of April and May that were brought to fruition in a meticulous way.

A special assembly on the occasion of Baisakhi was conducted in the school auditorium. Speeches on the occasion were delivered by the students and hymns were sung by the school choir. Mr. S.S. Shanni Head of Punjabi department who was the master of the ceremony dwelt upon the importance of Baisakhi touching upon the various aspects of the day. He narrated in detail as to how and why the Khalsa Panth was created by Guru Gobind Singh Ji and how this festival is synonymous with Punjab and boisterous Punjabis. With his mesmerizing speech,
Mr. Shammi brought alive our rich past.

Inter-House English debate for seniors (Class XI and XII) was held on May 2008. The topic for the debate was, " The recent row over the olympic tocrch is an opportunity for India to put 1962 on an even keel." Two participants from each house took part in it who were well-prepared and did their best to defeat their opponents by giving cogent reasons in their fiery speeches. The motion was ultimately defeated with the speakers and the audience emphasising more on pragmatism rather than slogan raising and jingoism. It was quite difficult for the judges to single out the position holders. Mr. R.M. Puri the incharge of this debate really put in his best to help the participants come up to the desired standard. Congratulations !

Inter House debate for group B (class IX and X) was held on 7th May 2008. The topic for the debate was "IPL ruins the game of cricket." The participants tried to defeat one another in the debate with their well - prepared speech. The debators for the topic rued that the cricket as a game had totally been commercialized where all concerned meant to mint the money. However who spoke against the topic felt that IPL would boost the morale of the cricketers. Mr. Sukhjeet Singh Goraya was the organiser of the debate. Kudos to him.

Inter House Hindi and Punjabi debates were also conducted as per the schedule and the participants did very well. In addition to that, the Inter-House declamation contests for English, Punjabi and Hindi were held in this term. The students of classes VII and VIII took part in them.

The Middle House show was put up on 19th April 2008 which was a pure delight. It included group and solo songs, English Play, parody, Hindi Play medley of dances and Bhangra. Kudos to Mrs. Ravinder Kaur House mistress and Mr. Shahid Ahmed Housemaster and the participants for that colourful evening.

Calligraphy competition for all the classes was also held on. There were 3 categories in total 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th and 12th. Two students from each house in a section participated. The students took part in the competition enthusiastically conducted by our art teacher Mr. Amrinder Singh.

The open sunday fell on 27th April and most of the parents turned up to know the academic progress of their wards from the concerned teachers.

Inter-Horse, hockey matches that were played in the first week of May were a pure delight. In the Junior and Middle Houses it was Beas House that lifted the trophies and among the senior house Jumna House clinched the champion trophy.

So Ravi house guys are up again and back to their studies in this new term. The students who have done well in the final examination got scholar batches. Maximum boys were from Ravi house who got scholar batches.

The school riding team went to Delhi horse show this year under the captaincy of Harjinder Singh Khosa, who got one gold medal in Tent pegging. Jatinder Singh and Jaspreet Singh brought seven and one medals respectively for the school.

From the Blue Oceans of Jr. Wing

The most important ingredient in the formula of success is performing consistently.

The 27th of April was the first Open Sunday for the new boys and every child was eager to meet his parents. The parents met the teachers to know about the performance of their children. The mixed response of the teachers made the students realise that the competition is tough and they all need to work really hard throughout the year if they really desire to excel in academics. Moreover, the unit tests are commencing from 19th May and every one has started getting serious. All are found busy learning their lessons and the revision tests are on too. The new boys look quite relaxed since they've all met their parents on the Open Sunday. Like the old fellows they too have the urge to excel in academics and the urge to do well in sports and other co-curricular activities. They desire to learn more and to know more. So they are actually the trendsetters for the upcoming future boys.

April was filled with a number of activities like the calligraphy competition and the Poetry Recitation Competition. The Beas House students did exceptionally well and hope they would show the same enthusiasm and confidence in other competitions which are to take place. The winners of the scholars batches for session 2007-08 from the Beas House are Gurjot Brar, Ekamjot Singh, Mandeep Singh and Ramanjit Singh.. Recently the Junior Wing has started its Spoken English Lab which is the envy of the whole town. The boys just adore having their Spoken English classes in the new lab. The stress for spoken English is the first priority of our institution. A few days back the junior boys were addressed by the senior girls who explained that without English we stand nowhere in today's world. After food, clothing and shelter, English has become the basic need of man.

The Inter-house hockey matches started from 2nd May. Our boys did well to win the trophy for our House. All the best guys ! Last month the boys were given the tetanus vaccinations. Some took it happily while others looked scared and unhappy. They knew that had their parents been there, they would have never let their darling sons go through the painful trauma and the fearful sight of those horrible vaccinations.

The unit tests are ending on 24th May and then comes the much awaited summer vacation. The boys are eagerly looking forward to it and they have already started planning their vacation.

Happy summer holidays.

Success is failure turned inside out-The silver tent of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems so far; so stick to the fight when you're hardest hit It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit."

Jr. Sutlej House

Whenever you commit a mistake, admit it,

Whenever you get a sound advice, follow it,

Whenever you find a change, accept it,

Whenever you see something good, appreciate it.

It's nice to see our new friends settled happily and comfortably amongst us. They have adjusted themselves very well and have become an inseparable part of the sutlej family. They don't miss their parents now which became evident on the open sunday with every newcomer reporting back in the evening with a smiling face.

A host of activities were conducted this month. There were calligraphy competitions in English, Hindi and Punjabi. The whole junior school participated in these competitions. The sutlejians participated with great fervour in the Inter House Hindi poetry recitation. It was quite heartening to see the budding talent of the newcomers participating with great zeal and zest in the poetry recitation. The green parrots bagged the third position in the competition. We hope to do exceedingly well in the English and Punjabi poetry recitations and story-telling competition to be conducted in the month of May.

We're indeed privileged to have one of the best language labs of the country in our school. It is equipped with the latest advanced techniques of teaching English to the students with the help of audio-visual modes and the projector. We go to the language lab regularly where we learn the correct pronunciation of words, add to our vocabulary and enter into discussions with our English teachers after watching slides of stories and information and knowledge based concepts on the projector. This is a healthy exercise which promotes understanding and interaction between the teacher and students and helps us to gain confidence and fluency in spoken English. The language lab has thus opened new vistas of knowledge and has made the teaching learning process very creative and enjoyable. We express our heart-felt gratitude to our worthy Headmaster and the Head junior wing for having provided us the wonderful facility of the language lab.

The green parrots are now all set to display their very best in the inter house hockey matches. Even the sweltering heat of May cannot dampen our spirits and keep us away from victory. We wish every body good luck for the unit tests commencing on 19th May. May your painstaking efforts bear fruit ! We also wish everybody a memorable and enjoyable vacation at home with family and friends.

Senior Boarder Girls

As the Baisakhi got over, the hot summer weather engulfed the surroundings. The term was quite eventful as many co-curricular activities like middle house show, debates and declamations have taken place in the school. Girls participated in all these activities whole-heartedly.

It is a matter of pride that the middle house put up a good show in the house evening held on 19th April 08. The middle house girls thrilled the school atmosphere by their active participation in the house show. As far as the debating skill is concerned, among the senior girls B0543 Inderpreet Kaur and S0526 Harsangeet Kaur bagged first and third position respectively in the Senior English debate. In Senior Punjabi Debate R0578 Harmanjeet Kaur and R0608 Amandeep Kaur stood first and second respectively so it is a matter of pride for all of us.

Recently, Harmanjeet Kaur and Jasraj Kaur from XIIth class returned with their wonderful experience from the senior Regional Round Square Conference, 2008 held at The Lawrence School Sanawar. Keeping in mind the importance of the participation, I would also like to mention that inderpreet Kaur had participated in the All India High Catchpole Inter School English debate held at RIMC, Dehradun, so her participation needs immense appreciation.

In the field of games, girls are not lagging behind. As the Basketball girls took part in the V-14 Basketball Tournament at Pinegrove School Subhatu, we hope for good results from them as they left no stone unturned during their practice sessions.

Last but not the least, for the unit tests the Boarder girls have started working hard to produce good results. In the end, on behalf of the entire boarder girls. I would like to convey best wishes to all the students for their unit tests.

Senior Round Square Conference at

The Lawrence School Sanawar

Five students from PPS Nabha attended the Senior Regional Remd Square Conference held at the Lawrence school Sanawar from 24th April - 26th April. They were Jasraj Kaur, Srijan Shukla, Harmanpreet Kaur, Harinder Singh and Jagtar Singh. The theme of the conference was Heritage - Inheritance of Legacy. After the orientation, students from 14th participant schools were allotted baraza groups. There were six baraza groups with one student or teacher from each school. Mr. Malhans the pioneer figure of Kalka-Shimla railway formally declared the conference open. The remainder of the first day was spent on service activities such as visit to a lepers' hospital, tree plantation etc. The port lunch session was slated for the architectural survey of the building of Lawrence school Sanawar. We noted the finer points of architecture and various baraza groups put up a multi-media presentation to highlight their findings and suggestions.

On second day we went to Shimla for the heritage walk. A trained guide enlightened us on the rich architectural heritage of the Viceregal Lodge - which is now an institute for advanced post - doctoral research. After a visit to the ridge we reached Sanawar by the dinner time. On the third and last day, the participant schools put up their street plays that had been prepared on the theme of the conference. It was followed by a fiery and passionate debate on the topic "preserving heritage is a wastage of time and money". After lunch, Mr. S.R. Das the former principal of many prestigious schools gave an interesting lecture on the origin of Round Square and its founder Kurt Hahn. After the conference was officially declared closed, the delegates went to Headmaster's residence for a tea party. The bonhomie and excitement was writ large on every body's face. The last evening was reserved for a dinner and dance party.

On 27th April, we bade farewell to our new friends and brought with us cherished memories from the Lawrence School Sanawar that we would treasure for the rest of our lives.
